Being in the world, but not of it

In a number of places the Bible tells us to be in the world, but not be of the world. As Jesus followers this reminds us that life is not all there is and this world is not our final destination.

So how do we live in the world and not be a part of it? For me this is about not holding tightly to the things of the world while still being a part of it.

For example I enjoy two things that can be seen as worldly – weight training and AFL football. On the surface people could say why do you work so hard in the gym and why are you so passionate about footy?

Weight training gives me enjoyment. I love feeling strong, being toned and fit. I like the way it makes me feel after a workout. But I also know that this body has a use by date and that it is destined for the ground. One day I won’t need it anymore and I will enter eternity, but I want to be fit while I am here.

The same goes with AFL footy. I get caught up in the games, talk about it with friends, watch the footy shows on tv and I follow my team passionately. But in saying this it is a temporary thing and ultimately it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. Footy though is something I enjoy and it helps me to connect with others who enjoy footy too.

For me there are a number of ideas that guide my thinking when it comes to the things of this world.

  1. Don’t get too caught up in the things of this world as they can lead us astray (1 John 2:15-16)
  2. Don’t get caught up in the worries of this life that can press in on us (Matthew 13:22)
  3. Remember this world is passing away so hold loosely to the things of this world (Revelation 21:1-3)
  4. Do enjoy life. This is where we live for now so be a part of it – eat, drink and enjoy life (Ecclesiastes 8:15)
  5. Remember to seek first God’s Kingdom, because that is ultimately what life is all about (Matthew 6:33)

As I have said many times before on this website, we will spend way more time in eternity so we need to live accordingly. However, we live in this world now as our temporary home, so we need to be a part of it with right perspective to it. Enjoy life, but don’t hold too tightly to the things of this world.

God Bless,
