In Philippians 3 the Apostle Paul encourages us to move forward in our life with Christ. In verses 13-14 it says…
No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.”
Philippians 3:13-14 NLT
In these verses Paul wants us to do two things.
1. Forget the past
This means the old ways of living, past bad experences, old things said to you. These things can hold us back or even paralyze us.
In telling us to forget the past, Paul was someone who persecuted Christians and had them thrown in jail or killed. He knew what it meant the leave the past behind. It was vital for him and the people around him that he moved on from his past. Fast forward 2000 years, it is important to us that he did too!
2. Focus on what lies ahead
There are so many great things about following Christ. We have salvation, we live a changed life, we have the Holy Spirit, we have the privilege of serving God, we are growing to be more like Christ, we have our hope of heaven.
Paul knew for us to grow in Christ and be all that we can be for Him, we have to move on from our past and focus on what lies ahead. Even though he was a great example for us today, he knew he had not made it and he had to keep moving forward.
So look forward, run the race and look forward to the heavenly prize that awaits you.
