Proverbs 9:9-12 NLT says, “Instruct the wise, and they will be even wiser. Teach the righteous, and they will learn even more. Fear of the LORD is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment. Wisdom will multiply your days and add years to your life. If you become wise, you will be the one to benefit. If you scorn wisdom, you will be the one to suffer.”
Wisdom is more than just knowing lots of information or being an expert in a field, it is about applying what you know and making good decisions in a godly way. In these verses we can learn three key things.
1. Keep learning – even if you have a certain amount of wisdom you need to keep learning. Keep learning about God, His Word, people and the world around you, your calling and gifts. Keep growing and receiving instruction from wise people. Verse 9 says “Instruct the wise and they will become wiser”.
2. Fear God – having a reverent fear of God is the key to wisdom (v10). We need to understand that God is the creator and sustainer of this universe. No-one is more powerful than God, no-one knows and understands this world and human beings better than Him. He holds holds eternity in His hands. Having a reverent fear of God as our foundation is the key to wisdom.
3. Wisdom pays – In verse 12 it says that if you become wise you will benefit. Seeking wisdom brings joy and is more valuable that gold, silver, and rubies and is like a tree of life to those who have it (Proverbs 3:13-18). Having wisdom means you will make good decisions, stay on the right path in life, and it will add years to your life (v11).
Wisdom is worth the effort. So follow Jesus, study the Word, walk in God’s ways, learn from wise people, pray continuously, serve God wholeheartedly and love God with all of your heart. Wisdom will come.
