Audio: Love, actions and truth
For my devotions today I read two passages that both spoke to me and reminded me.
The first was 1 John 3:16-19…
We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters. If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion-how can God’s love be in that person? Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. Our actions will show that we belong to the truth, so we will be confident when we stand before God.
The second was from James 2:14-17…
What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”-but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.
It reminded me afresh how much these two passages tied in together and give us three great points.
1 John 3:16 reminds us that we know what love is because Jesus gave Himself for us in His death on the cross. He did this to pay the price for our sin and purchase our salvation. To me this is the ultimate love that has ever been shown in history. The Son of God left the glories of heaven to live amongst us, to show us what God is like and to die on the cross for us. This is sacrificial love personified. Love incarnate.
Then both passages talk about talking care of our brother and sisters in need. 1 John 3 talks about living well and having enough money and not showing compassion in helping others. James 2 says it is not good enough to offer kind words and blessings when material needs like food and clothing are not given. Like Jesus demonstrated, true love must have actions attached.
The passages conclude with the thought that our actions in love show that we below to the truth. 1 John 3 tells us that our actions prove that we belong to the truth. Meaning we belong to God and His Kingdom. James 2 reminds us that faith without works is dead and useless. So if we want to have a faith that is true and alive, we must show is by our actions in helping our brothers and sisters in need.
So today lets us be reminded that we learn what true love is from Christ’s example on the cross, that true faith has actions in the way it helps others, and that when we do this we show that the truth of God’s Kingdom is in us.
Let us pray…
Dear Jesus, thank You that You came and died on the cross for me. Thank You that You paid the price for my sin and purchased my salvation. I pray that You will help and empower me by Your Holy Spirit to be a person who helps my brothers and sisters in need. Help me to use the resources You have entrusted to me to bless those around me. I ask in Jesus’ name, Amen.
