New heart and new spirit

“For I will gather you up from all the nations and bring you home again to your land. “Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. Your filth will be washed away, and you will no longer worship idols. And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. And I will put my Spirit in you so that you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my regulations.” Ezekiel‬ ‭36:24-27‬ ‭NLT‬‬

These are the words that God asked Ezekiel to speak to His people that had gone astray. Because of their previous behaviour they had been scattered among the nations.

In this passage God promised a number of things.

1. To bring them home to their land
2. To cleanse them and wash away their filth so they will no longer worship idols
3. To give them a new heart that is tender and responsive
4. To put a new Spirit in them so they will carefully follow God’s decrees

These are four amazing things that we all need. As I type I think about the times I have turned away from God and gone my own way.

Like the prodical son I went to the far land and squandered my inheritance. Especially early on in my new journey of faith. The world called me back and I answered.

But thanks be to God He kept on pursuing me. He sent people to speak to me too. The Holy Spirit kept on drawing me back and I came home.

Where are you today? Are you walking with God or have you wandered away? Do you need a prompt from the Holy Spirit to come home?

Today is the day to come home.

Dear Lord Jesus, I am sorry I have gone my own way. I am sorry I have wandered off and followed the ways of the world. Please welcome me home today. I ask You to replace my hard heart with one that is tender and responsive to You. Please forgive my sin and wash away my filth. Help me to live for You each day and follow Your decrees. I ask in Jesus’ name, Amen.
