DaveQuinnOnline.blog

After blogging for about 12 years on The PASSION Blog and here at WordPress I thought it was time to get my own domain name on WordPress.

Rather than the generic davequinnonline.wordpress.com, it is now davequinnonline.blog. This is a small change, but it comes more inline with my Twitter and Instagram accounts.

I have been using Twitter since 2012 and I have just started using Instagram in the last few months.

Anyway, I hope you keep dropping by.

God Bless,

Dave

Worshipping sports stars

I was watching an interview with Sachin Tendulkar on the cricket coverage yesterday. It was interesting to hear what his life is like in India. He can hardly leave his home in India as he is so popular and people mob him wherever he goes. From the interview it sounded like he preferred to be away from home as he more of a chance to relax and have time alone.

This made me think about how at times we idolise our sports stars. It is to the point that in some cases we worship them. From a very young age many of them are mobbed by adoring fans, bucket loads of money is thrown at them and they are treated like royalty. Is it any wonder that some of them go off track?

Now I love my sport just as much as the next guy, probably more to be honest. But I think we need to keep our adulation in check. We can admire our sports heroes and respect their ability, but it has to fall a long way short of worship.

The Bible tells us that we should worship God and Him alone (Exodus 20:3). When we put our sports stars on a high pedistool and give them worship, it sets them up for a big fall as people were not ever intended to be worshipped. More importantly though, it robs God of what should belong to Him alone.

More on Stemcells

One of the key questions with the Stemcell debate is, “When do we think life begins?” More than any other question I think this will ultimately help us to make up our mind.

If we think about it a bit, if our position is that life begins when a child is born, we will think the stemcell debate is a non issue. If we think life begins when when we can see a developing child by ultrasound in a womb with hands and feet moving, then that will shape our decision. If we think life begins at the moment of the egg being fertilised then that would make us think a whole lot differently on the whole issue.

One of the things I have tried to do is look at some verses from the Bible and see what God says about conception and when He thinks life actually begins. Here a re a few I have cut and paste from BibleGateway.com…

Job 10:8-12 – You formed me with your hands; you made me,…You guided my conception and formed me in the womb. You clothed me with skin and flesh, and you knit my bones and sinews together. You gave me life and showed me your unfailing love. My life was preserved by your care.

Psalms 139:13-16 – You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous–and how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.

Isaiah 49:5 – And now the LORD speaks–he who formed me in my mother’s womb to be his servant, who commissioned me to bring his people of Israel back to him. The LORD has honored me, and my God has given me strength.

Jeremiah 1:4-5 – The LORD gave me a message. He said, “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my spokesman to the world.

When does life begin?

Currently in Australia the Federal Parliament is debating a Bill that would potenitally allow an abortion pill (RU486) to be introduced and made available to the Australian public. When this pill is taken it causes a woman to mis-carriage.

On big issues like this I think it is important to look at what the Bible says. Whether or not you agree with abortion, I thought it would be good to have a look at some Bible versus that look at when life actually begins.

Job 10:8-12 – You formed me with your hands; you made me,…You guided my conception and formed me in the womb. You clothed me with skin and flesh, and you knit my bones and sinews together. You gave me life and showed me your unfailing love. My life was preserved by your care.
